The Coleman Feather 442 Stove is the only liquid fuel stove I have owned but recently I was looking at upgrading to something newer stove. I had a look at a few other brands available but the 442 seems to be the easiest liquid fuel stove I could find.
Unfortunately, no longer available. I recently spoke with Coleman and parts are still available if you need to repair a second hand one. It has an almost instant flame which can be turned down to a reasonable simmer. The all-in-one feature of this stove is a great idea but it makes it a heavy stove. I have had this stove for over 20 years and dragged it all over the world. Fuel consumption is excellent especially if it isn’t turned up to full blast. At full blast it really spits out some heat and boils water pretty quickly.
Unlike an MSR Whisperlite which produces quite a flame while priming the vaporising tube, once the unit is pressurized it goes from 0 to full on roar more or less right away! It can run on what we call “Shellite” in Australia or Naptha in other places and also Unleaded. Unleaded requires a little caution though as if there’s any crap in your fuel it will clog up the vaporising jet pretty quickly. I had this issue in South America with a dirty batch of fuel. The stove still worked but only at full roar which was okay for boiling water but made cooking a challenge.
Once lit, the stove flame is more controllable than most liquid fuel stoves which is a real bonus if you demand more than tasteless and expensive boil in the bag food! The maximum output is quite fearsome and can bring a pot of water to boil in a matter of minutes. It has an integral wind shield but I would still recommend using an additional shield as it doesn’t offer full protection from stronger winds.
The fuel tank is connected to the burner to produce an all-in-one unit. This saves the hassle of having to connect the stove to a fuel bottle. However, it is convenient, but it means it cannot be split to stow the fuel bottle separately and fuel will still need to be carried in a separate fuel bottle.
Over all, this is a well-constructed and powerful stove that is as close to using gas canisters as you are going to get. It was a well-priced and economical (a tank will last a weekend). The flame requires virtually no priming, has a large degree of control and the ‘all in one’ design keeps it simple and robust
